When she was 15, Bigelow visited a friend's cottage near a forest to the north of Michigan, her home state. The friend produced a shotgun and the pair began shooting bowling pins to pass the time. A high-school water polo player, Bigelow 'had never shot a gun in my life', she said, and was at first unsteady. 'The kick pushed me back,' she recalled. 'But I got right back up.' Soon, like millions of her fellow Americans, Bigelow was hooked. She began shooting every month, 'just for fun', and learnt how to handle a firearm. 'My shot got a lot better,' she said. Once she graduated from university and left home for a job at a conservative pressure group, she decided that she needed a weapon of her own.
